CRISTIANO BALBI
Nasce a Murano il 28 marzo 1956.
Figlio d’arte, entra nel mondo del vetro all’età di soli nove anni, iniziando da garzonetto nella fornace del padre, e via via percorrendo tutte le tappe secondo l’antica tradizione vetraria: garzone, serventino, servente fino ad arrivare a maestro vetraio.
Rimane in questa fornace per dodici anni e acquisisce una grande e preziosissima esperienza in tutte le fasi della lavorazione.
A ventun’anni, ormai maestro formato, lascia la fornace del padre e inizia a collaborare con le più antiche e qualificate fornaci muranesi: Barovier & Toso, Mazzuccato, Bisazza, Ars, ecc.
Nel 1982 apre uno studio proprio e fin da subito mostra di essere uno dei più completi e innovativi artisti del “vetro a lume”, tecnica nella quale applica le forme le tecniche acquisite in fornace, determinando una vera e propria svolta nell’espressione di questa particolare lavorazione del vetro.
Opere sue vengono esposte in varie mostre e musei, collabora con vari artisti contemporanei come Dalisi e Robert Wilson, realizza per la Eco Italia le riproduzioni di opere Fenice e Celte che vengono esposte alle mostre di Palazzo Grassi in Venezia
Impegnato da sempre a far conoscere e apprezzare questa tecnica, ancora poco conosciuta, partecipa a mostre ed esibizioni in tutto il mondo, portando la dimostrazione di questo lavoro fino nelle trasmissioni televisive (Il mercato del sabato su Rai 1). Per anni ricopre un importante ruolo da dirigente di categoria nell’associazione artigiani di Venezia.

He was born on 28th March 1956 in Murano.
He followed in the family tradition, entering the world of glass at the early age of nine,
Starting work in his father’s furnace and gradually going through all the stages of apprenticeship,
according to the old glass-making tradition: at first working as an apprentice as “garzone”,
“serventino”, “servente” and finally becoming glass-maker.
He worked in his father’s furnace for twelve years, acquiring a great and really valuable experience in all the phases of manufacturing. At the age of twenty-five, become experienced master, he left his father’s furnace and started to work together with the oldest and most qualified furnaces in Murano
such as Barovier & Toso, Mazzuccato, Bisazza, Ars etc.
In 1982 he opened his own studio and from the beginning he showed to be one of the most complete and innovative artists in lampworking, a particular technique learnt in the furnace, that he uses when
Creating forms, determining a real turning point in this particular way of working glass.
Many of his work of art are shown in different exhibitinos and museums, he works together with various contemporary artists such as Dalisi and Robert Wilson, for Eco Italia he makes reproductions of Phoenician and Celt works of art whichare shown at Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
He has always devoted himself to make this technique, which is not very well known yet, become popular and appreciable. He takes part to shows and exhibitions all over the world, showing his work even on TV programs (il mercato del sabato on Rai 2). He has covered an important role for years as professional manager in the association of craftsmen of Venice.
